The poll (above) apparently was taken shortly after the Orlando massacre, so it's possible that emotions are in play, to an extent. The various issues of "gun control" probably are more complex than polls may indicate, but nonetheless -- per the following January, 2016 "Politifact" article link -- public support has (previously) existed, at least for the background-check aspect.
